An addictive action sci-fi thriller

Mdk, devised by Shiny, is a classic third-person shooter video game that will celebrate its 20th anniversary in April 2017. It was originally designed for Windows, but its success ensured it was ported to both the Mac and the PS1. The game was lauded at the time for pushing technical boundaries and producing gameplay that was beautifully addictive. IGN gave the game a score of 8/10.

Features

Mdk is renowned for its simplicity which appealed to all gamers. The objective of the game is to shoot all the aliens that infest the dystopian Earth, and prevent the alien takeover. Whilst this sounds basic enough, the artificial intelligence of the enemy and the clever level design means that the game is a great challenge and was a tremendous forerunner for the breakthrough of 3d games in the early 21st century. The game also contains a basic storyline, interlaced with good humour.

Conclusion

It is unsurprising that Mdk became a fantastic commercial success, as it contained the tried and trusted elements of addictive gameplay and a story that any gamer, casual or otherwise, could get their teeth into. A sequel was developed for Mdk in 2000, but it lacked the surprise factor that the original had, and it wasn't as successful.
